Stand Up For The Unemployed- Help Stage a Breadline in NYC

Posted by

The month of November makes me think about Thanksgiving and eating turkey. But, for many Americans this year, there won't be a big turkey feast. The sad reality is that with 10% of us without a job and even more working jobs that don't pay a living wage, there just isn't enough money to afford this type of extravagance. For the people who have lost their jobs, their unemployment benefits and even their homes, this is not the time for feasts and spending time with family. It is a time when many friends and even family members “forget”to invite them to Thanksgiving dinners because they don't want to have to think about things like joblessness during their dinner. The long-term unemployed in this country have been dealing with not only poverty, but also feeling invisible.

This Thanksgiving however, some of the nation's jobless are refusing to be quiet about their situation. If fact, in New York City on November 20th, unemployed persons and their supporters are being asked to help re-create one of the famous images of the breadlines during the Great Depression. People who want to participate are asked to wear dark clothing, long coats and scarf to look similar to the ubiquitous image.

The Breadline is going to be staged in front of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY, at 33 Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan. There will be media present as well as a documentary filmmaker. People who wish to attend are encouraged to bring friends, family, children and loaves of bread to use as props if they can.
